ABC FRIENDS WELCOMES FURTHER LABOR PROMISE

ABC FRIENDS WELCOMES DRAMA FUNDING PROMISE

Expresses Caution at Tied Funding
June 4th, 2016
The not-for-profit organisation fighting to save the ABC has welcomed a promise by Labor to partially restore some of the public broadcaster’s funding.
As part of a wider arts funding announcement, Labor says it will commit $60m to the ABC over three years, but the money is tied, which means it would only be made available for drama.
“Of course, as an organisation, ABC Friends is thrilled Labor has promised this money so as to try to resurrect the ABC’s routed drama department,” said ABC Friends National Spokesman Ranald Macdonald.
“It must be remembered that the Abbott/Turnbull governments have come close to crippling the ABC with more than $300m in budget cuts.”
“Tied funding isn’t ideal, because it opens the possibility of political interference, and we value an independent ABC.”
“It should be up to the ABC’s independent managers and executives to decide where best to spend funding,” he said.
